(and Potentially a Slightly Questionable Life Choice)

naked gardening dayThere are holidays that make perfect sense—Mother’s Day, Thanksgiving, the first warm day you can finally sit outside with coffee and pretend you have your life together.

And then… there is World Naked Gardening Day.

Yes, it’s real. Yes, people celebrate it. And yes, it happens every year on the first Saturday in May—just when your garden is waking up and your neighbors are, unfortunately, also outside.

This delightfully odd tradition started in 2005, when a group of free-spirited gardening enthusiasts decided that tending the earth should be done in the most natural way possible. And by “natural,” they meant… very natural.

But before you clutch your pearls (or your pruning shears), it’s not meant to be scandalous. At its heart, this day is about something surprisingly wholesome:

  • Being comfortable in your own skin
  • Connecting with nature
  • And not taking yourself too seriously

Which, if we’re being honest, is something most of us could use a little more of.

Now, let’s be clear—you do not have to go all in to celebrate. This is a “choose your own adventure” kind of holiday:

  • A little barefoot gardening? Counts.
  • Tank top and sunshine? Also counts.
  • Fully clothed but laughing at the idea? Absolutely counts.

Because really, the spirit of the day isn’t about what you’re wearing (or not wearing). It’s about stepping outside, feeling the sun on your face, and remembering that life doesn’t always have to be so buttoned-up and proper.

That said… a few practical notes from someone who cares about your well-being:

  • Wear gloves. Truly. This is not optional.
  • Sunscreen is your friend. Everywhere.
  • Be mindful of thorns, bugs, and any curious neighbors with binoculars or cell phones.

Gardeners, it turns out, have the best sense of humor about all of this. The unofficial mottos alone are worth celebrating:

  • “Dirt don’t judge.”
  • “Let your garden see the real you.”
  • “Watch out for thorns… everywhere.”

So today, whether you’re planting tomatoes, pulling weeds, or simply sitting quietly among your flowers, take a moment to appreciate the simple, slightly ridiculous joy of being alive and outside.

Because a garden doesn’t care what you look like.
It just asks that you show up.

And maybe… just maybe… leave a little to the imagination.
