Today we celebrate Ireland, resilience, poetry, faith, folklore… and the annual global commitment to wearing aggressively green clothing and (for some) consuming far too many drinks containing liquid courage.

Here few fun facts for your festive conversations:

St. Patrick wasn’t actually Irish.

He was born in Roman Britain and brought to Ireland as a teenager. So technically, today is about an immigrant who came back to change a nation. Which feels surprisingly modern.

The shamrock story.

Legend says Patrick used a three-leaf clover to explain the concept of the Trinity. Ever since, we’ve treated roadside clover patches like sacred décor.

Blue was once the official color.

Early depictions of St. Patrick featured blue. Green took over later – likely because Ireland is approximately 94% green and 6% sheep.

There are no snakes in Ireland.

The famous “banishing of the snakes” is symbolic. Scientists say post–Ice Age Ireland never had snakes to begin with. Which means Patrick’s greatest miracle may have been excellent branding.

Corned beef and cabbage? Not exactly Irish.

It became popular among Irish immigrants in America. In Ireland, you’re more likely to find lamb or bacon. But we will not be fact-checking your dinner plate tonight.

The Chicago River is dyed green every year.

Because if you’re going to commit to a theme, commit fully.

St. Patrick’s Day is all about joy. About gathering. About music, storytelling, laughter, and maybe one or more questionable decisions involving a festive beverage.

So wear the green. Take the walk. Toast the day. Be responsible. Stay safe.

And if you find a four-leaf clover, please remember the rest of us when fortune arrives.

Sláinte.
