healthy aging monthSeptember is Healthy Aging Month — a good reminder that healthy aging isn’t about fighting age. It’s about living well at every age.

Yes, genetics matter. But so do many of the small things we do every day:

Keep moving. Walk, garden, stretch, dance, lift something heavy enough to keep those muscles working.

Nourish yourself. Good food matters — and so does enjoying it.

Keep learning. Read. Travel. Take a class. Learn a new language. Try something you’re terrible at. Curiosity gives the brain something new to do.

Stay connected. Relationships aren’t just nice to have. Social connection is an important part of our physical and emotional well-being.

Spend time in nature. Step outside. Notice what’s blooming. Listen to the birds. Walk beneath some trees. Dig in the dirt. Nature gives us places to move, breathe, restore — and remember that we’re part of something much bigger than ourselves.

Keep your sense of wonder. Slow down and notice things. Ask questions. Look up at the night sky. Watch a butterfly or honeybee. Be amazed that a tiny seed knows what to do. Wonder keeps the world from becoming ordinary.

Make room for joy. Don’t save it for vacations, holidays… or someday. Savor the small stuff every day – Your favorite songs, a great cup of coffee or tea, flowers on the kitchen table, the people you love, your health, and the simple things you too often take for granted.

And laugh. Often. Life is serious enough without us helping it along.

Have something to look forward to. A trip. Dinner with a friend. Planting next year’s garden. A new project. Tuesday.

Healthy aging doesn’t mean you should try to be 30 when you’re 60, 70 or 80.

It means doing what we can to remain strong, curious, connected, engaged — and open to wonder and joy — for as long as possible.

I have this quote on the wall in my gathering room where I can see it every day:

“Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.”

So keep looking for those moments.

Keep moving. Keep learning. Keep connecting. Keep noticing.

And whatever your age, never stop making room for wonder and joy.

Because the goal isn’t simply about adding years to our lives.

It’s also about adding life to our years.
